Could you please give your opinions on the (possible) start of my novel?€?

Thank you very, very much. I have written around five versions of the start of the novel and aren’t satisfied with any of them, this is the latest version, let me know what you think. Thanks again. Any tips are welcome too.
‘Yet to be titled’
Chapter One
I stormed outside and slammed the door hard shut behind me. I could still hear Craig’s voice chasing me through the wooden door, and though muffled, I could still make out the blunt profanity.
I slung my heavy bag around to my front as I was hurrying off down the street and scrambled around in the inside pouch for my little mp3. My hands enclosed around the cool metal and I whipped it out, eagerly plugging it into my ears and putting Clair De Lune on repeat. I sighed as the ethereal, fantastical music touched my ears like chocolate touches the tongue. I clicked the volume up to full – mind you, it didn’t go very loud, because it was a soft classical piece. The most beautiful piece I had ever heard.
After a few minutes of walking in the cool air, and listening to my lullaby, I felt calmer. I took one of the earphones out; Mike would be joining me any minute. Sure enough, as I rounded onto the next street, I saw his tall and thin familiar shape moving towards me.
‘Hey,’ I said when he caught up.
‘Hey. What’s on the music menu today?’ He asked, smiling with his hands casually in his pockets.
‘Debussy.’ I stated.
‘Again?’ He says, though if he’s surprised, it’s not evident in his voice.
‘Yup.’ I said, staring straight ahead.
‘You’re still upset then, eh?’ He asks, and I can feel his gaze.
‘Well it’s been a rough week and you know my Debussy calms me down.’ I said, looking at him and giving him a reassuring smile. I didn’t want him to worry.
‘You know if…’ He said, trailing off.
‘I know, thank you.’ I said quietly. Mike was all ears, always. I appreciated him for that…he was the only one I could really talk to, yet I still chose not to. I don’t really know why.
‘Anyway, how was your weekend?’ I asked, smiling again.
‘Eh, alright. Stayed at my dad’s…’
‘Oh yeah, how’d it go?’ I asked, though I could tell from his face.
He shrugged. ‘He broke up with his girlfriend, so he was a bit of a sad sap the whole weekend.’
‘Oh…that’s too bad.’ I said, reaching up and patting him on the arm.
‘Never mind. He’ll probably have another one by the time I next see him.’ He said bitterly, looking away.
I didn’t know what to say; I wasn’t much good at consoling people. Maybe he sensed my discomfort, because he changed the subject.
‘Guess it’s a crappy start to the week for both of us,’ He said, smiling again.
I grinned, ‘yep. Ah well, there’s always next week.’
We walked in silence for a few minutes. It brought back the memory of the first time we met – two years ago, but it felt like much more. I had started walking faster after I saw his lean and (back then) shorter figure approaching me. I wasn’t much good at socializing, especially with strangers, and most especially with boys.
To my dismay, he caught up with me and struck up a conversation – if you can call him talking to me and me nodding and smiling politely a conversation. A one-way conversation if you like.
Eventually, I felt comfortable around him, maybe a few weeks after we had started to walk together, and our conversations developed. Now we’re good friends. I smiled…imagine if he hadn’t been persistent with me those first few weeks?
‘Okay, well, this is my turn off,’ Mike said, bringing me back the present.
I sighed. ‘Well try and have a good day,’
‘You too, see you this arvo,’ He called out as he turned down another street.
‘See you.’ I said, putting my earphone back in and continuing down the road. I glanced at my watch and picked up my pace, it seemed that the cold wind did too. I was in a better mood already, thanks to Mike. Sure, our conversation wasn’t the most cheerful one, but just talking to someone that I could relate to was nice. Because I sure knew that wouldn’t be happening at school – or at home for that matter.
I saw Mike for about ten minutes in total everyday, five before school and five after school, yet I felt as though he was my closest friend. Perhaps because he was my only friend, to be really honest. Sometimes I wondered what it would be like if Mike went to the same school as me…I would never have to feel like a Nigel No-Friends…but perhaps it’s meant to be this way. Just the few minutes of my day meeting with the few minutes of his day – maybe that’s what made our friendship so special.
The wind picked up its speed and woke me from my thoughts, tossing my hair about and stinging my nose. The music came to my attention again. The piano in my ears became louder and more passionate – like at the climax of a good romance movie – I thought of myself playing it, how my fingers would glide across the shiny white keys…I imagined Debussy creating this beauty, closing his eyes and feeling his heart warm up, ‘this is the one’ he would
I liked it alot!
2 things-
1. Use quotation marks around speech
2. Most American/Canadians don’t know that avro means afternoon, I know b/c I’m cool like that, but yeah.
Other than that, I enjoyed reading it.
How can I fix my tinnitus?
Posted by Barb in What is Tinnitus? on March 8, 2010
I am a teenager and I have constant tinnitus. I got it during an ear infection a year ago and it has not gone away. I took hearing tests, and the tests say my hearing is perfect, and I can hear eveything fine, but the ringing bothers me. I have no symptoms of any other disease, so I don’t know what to do.
Cut back on caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and aspirin; they can make ringing in the ears worse.
Have your hearing checked. A properly adjusted hearing aid may diminish or even eliminate the ringing.
Ask your doctor about ear devices that cover up, or mask, tinnitus. Low-volume white noise, such as television or radio static, may also help.
Exercise to improve circulation and possibly ease symptoms.
Consider acupuncture to relieve the buzzing.
Aspirin, especially if it’s overused, can cause ringing in the ears — and so can the aspirin-like herb white willow bark. Avoid both of them if ringing in the ears is a problem.
Loud noises may be the prime contributing factor to tinnitus. To help prevent further damage to the ears, wear earplugs. They are a boon if you’re often exposed to noisy machinery, music, or explosives.

is it true that Xanax can be used as a treatment for people with extreme tinnitus?
Posted by Barb in Tinnitus Treatment on March 8, 2010
That depends on a few things. What is causing the tinnitus? How old is the patient? What is the family history? What medications are they on? There are many things to consider.
I, myself, have tinnitus. I have also taken Xanax, but not for tinnitus. I found it a useful medication for what I was taking it for. It’s definitely not for everyone. For people who have addiction problems or the potential, it is not for them.
If the tinnitus is due to neurological problems, Xanax will not help. It may help if the ringing is the cause of extreme stress. It might give relief while the person learns other methods of stress reduction. It’s not a permanent solution.
How could I just "live with it" when suffering from tinnitus?
Posted by Barb in Tinnitus Remedies on March 8, 2010
I’ve tried so many different remedies for tinnitus. Lately it’s gotten so immensely bad it interferes with my sleep and daily life. It’s hard to concentrate on anything. Am I just supposed to "live with it"? What other option do I have?!
I don’t know of much other than this. There is an ear devise that gives off a sound that is supposed to cancel out the tinnitus sound. You should speak to an audiologist about it, or to start, google tinnitus cancelling.
Does Jesus hate me? Why did he do this to me?
Posted by Barb in Tinnitus Relief on March 8, 2010
A few years ago I gave up paganism and became a born again Christian. I went the whole 9 yards, burning my occult books, getting rid of questionable music, and listening the Christian music exclusively. I attended church every Sunday, and sometimes Wednesdays, as well.
One day, I was going through my prayer list on the Prayer Pal program on my Palm Pilot, and praying to Jesus when I heard a roaring noise in my right ear. It really scared me, as it sounded just like someone blowing in my ear. When it kept happening I figured out that I was hearing my own heartbeat, and the blood rushing through my arteries.
Its been close to 8 years now, and I still hear this distracting noise for a good portion of each day. Its called pulsatile tinnitus. Whoosch, whoosch, whoosch. I’ve been to numerous specialists, and undergone about $10,000 in tests over the years, and nobody can find a cause or provide a solution.
Jesus has done nothing to cure me through faith, and in fact it first happened WHILE I was praying to him. Never, while I was faithful, did I get relief from this problem.
Jesus has one hell of a sense of humor, doesn’t he.
What is the best cure for vertigo and tinnitus?
Posted by Barb in Tinnitus Cure on March 8, 2010
HI Ace
Here are a few testimonials on healing the issue.
FENUGREEK AND THYME
11/19/2007: Tara from Provo, Utah writes: "All throughout my childhood I had bouts of vertigo. Fluid would get into my ears, cross the ear drum and get stuck around the eustation tube. Recently, I had a severe bout that lasted almost a month. Decongestants and Meclizine would help but it would just come right back. I spoke with a good friend who is extremely knowledgable about herbs and she said she has had a similar problem. She uses a mix of Fenugreek and Thyme. She said its also good to use Pcynogenol as well. I have only been using the Fenugreek and Thyme mix but I have noticed a huge improvement. The mix of herbs is also good for general sinus clearing. Drink lots of water though because this will pull the fluid out of your body.
GINGKO BILOBA
8/21/2007: Julie from Kiel, Wisconsin writes: "I have found that ginko biloba has helped me with vertigo. When I have episodes of this I can take ginko for a few days and it goes away completely!"
Best of health to you

this is an old story i started in 17 and its an extreamly rough draft. However im thinking of changing it to a different era and culture (chinese possibly)
Any ideas?
Thanks!!!!!!!
The leaves rustled as they blew around my feet. I was Thirteen years old. Peoples screams filled the church. "Why! Why did this happen?". I looked down, my school socks were muddy, my legs had Goosebumps and I was shivering from the cold. My hair was wet, my school uniform torn. Within an instance, my whole world seemed to stand still. The noise’s around me blurred and for a moment. The only thing I could hear was a cry, a long and fearful cry. My mothers body lay there, as i lent down and put my hand upon hers i felt she was holding something. I took it out of her clenched fist. It was some sort of ancient pendant, silver with an inscription on the back in gold.
The smell around me was something that I was unable to determine. It was a musty smell, almost like blood or rotting flesh. I could however, smell my mothers perfume, only slightly, but it felt stronger then ever because of my complete fixation on it. It made me feel uncomfortable, it made me want hide away from everything forever.
The wind roared as i put it around my neck and fastened the clasp. A tear rolled down my cheek. But only one. No more. I wrapped my arms around myself and shut my eyes. I imagined the heavens and angels and whispered "Please, give me her back." I could hear sirens now, they became louder and louder, the tune thudding against my ear drum. I ran. I tripped. I blacked out.
Three years on, I’m still getting counselling treatment for that night. The warm sun beat down on my skin through the window, the rays of warmth filled my body with heat. Today was the last day of counselling. The last day of questions of ‘how I felt’ or how I was ‘coping’. Finally after today I could be normal…well at least try.
I watched my counsellor Jeanette walk into the room, she was tall, scrawny with jet black hair. She wore big glasses and had a strong smell of peppermint. She sat down and put her glasses on the end of her nose, whilst flicking through some past reports of my sessions. There was the occasional sigh but apart from that the wait wasn’t too bad.
"Now Mia…I know what happened to you was traumatic…I can understand that. But your 16 now, you need to get along with life."
"I didn’t ask to come here did i? And I am getting on with life I‘ll have you know." She always tried to act like my mother. I was her pity victim, her gossip, her charity.
"Mia… You haven’t been to school since you were 13…maybe you should go back."
Oh here we go. Go back? Have everyone whispering ‘Oh look! there’s that girl Mia, she was the daughter of that famous woman who threw herself off a church’. Or the constant harassment of teachers saying ’if I need to talk I can’. All I wanted to do was forget about it, not open up old wounds. Please. Save me the aggregation.
"I don’t want to go back, my income and life is fine now." I play with my fingers and try to not make eye contact.
"Mia, its a Saturday job, and you live with your father. A saturday job is not nearly enough income to support yourse-"
"Myself?" I roll my eyes and sigh.
She slides me over an envelope. it’s a brownish colour with some sort tea stain on the back. I open it slowly, inside it there’s a school, a date and a time for me to attend. I felt her touch the back of my shoulder. "Its in England, no’ one will have heard of you over there, you should give it a try…for your fathers sake at least."
In my head i began to wonder why i ever had to go through what i did. After it happened, minutes after the police arrived to hide my mother from news reporters, my father arrived. I remember waking up to him calling my name. I began to think it was all a dream. I cried. He took me in his arms and whispered "Don’t be scared princess, daddy’s here." I looked up and said "Is she really gone?" My dad turns whilst the rain beats down harder upon us. "No sweetie, mummy just had to go help the angels."
As i get up and walk out the door, i turn around. She says softly "Mia, its a chance. A chance for a new start. A new life.
I smile back but i don’t say thank you and i don’t say goodbye. I stand up, turn around and walk out.
old story i started like 5 months ago and im 17 its supposed to say
First thing you should do is print it off and read it out loud or get someone to read it to you. That way you will hear the errors and be able to correct them easier. I wouldn’t change the setting unless you are well aware of the setting you want to change it to. You mentioned Chinese but if you are not aware of what happens in Chinese culture don’t try to make it up because it won’t work.
The story flows and has its own excitement but do try to link sentences together to cut down on the number of times you use the word ‘I’. Overuse of that word can make reading a chore instead of a pleasure but otherwise keep at it and good luck.
A question about Tinnitus? (Experts please)?
Posted by Barb in About Tinnitus on March 8, 2010
I’m 26 and my tinnitus started 2 years back. It’s not too serious, usually during the day I can’t hear the ringing (its only through my left ear). Only when I wake up or if it’s really silent then it’s loud. If I get enough rest the ringing lowers in volume but if I lack sleep it gets loud. For a while I thought it was acoustic neuroma (tumor in the nerve tissues that causes tinnitus) but my ear doctor assured me twice along with my family doctor it wasn’t after a hearing test and didn’t recommend a MRI. He basically attributed to just getting older but I still consider myself young. I have normal blood pressure as well. My aunt has tinnitus as well for many years. What else do you think could be causing it? I was considering acupuncture or herbal medicine. Do you know anything that could work? Let me know your opinions. Thanks!
I have been lacking 8 hours of sleep for a loong time. Do you think proper sleep might solve this problem? Would seeing a neurologist help as well?
if you have tinnitus it means that you probably have hearing loss and that noise means that your body is trying to fix up your hearing problems.
do you listen to loud music/hear loud things? thats usually the cause
check this site out, it will help a lot:
