A question about Tinnitus? (Experts please)?

I’m 26 and my tinnitus started 2 years back. It’s not too serious, usually during the day I can’t hear the ringing (its only through my left ear). Only when I wake up or if it’s really silent then it’s loud. If I get enough rest the ringing lowers in volume but if I lack sleep it gets loud. For a while I thought it was acoustic neuroma (tumor in the nerve tissues that causes tinnitus) but my ear doctor assured me twice along with my family doctor it wasn’t after a hearing test and didn’t recommend a MRI. He basically attributed to just getting older but I still consider myself young. I have normal blood pressure as well. My aunt has tinnitus as well for many years. What else do you think could be causing it? I was considering acupuncture or herbal medicine. Do you know anything that could work? Let me know your opinions. Thanks!
I have been lacking 8 hours of sleep for a loong time. Do you think proper sleep might solve this problem? Would seeing a neurologist help as well?

if you have tinnitus it means that you probably have hearing loss and that noise means that your body is trying to fix up your hearing problems.
do you listen to loud music/hear loud things? thats usually the cause

questions about tinnitus?

At random times this sound will go in my left ear, never my right. Like at random times, but never when I am asleep. It’s just like this "mmmm" "mmmm" "hmmmm" It’s never a ringing sound either so I know I have tinnitus. I don’t know how I got it. I don’t listen to my music loud or anything. What are the possibilities of it’s cause and how do I cure it?

it could be tinnitus — tinnitus is any sound in the ear, not just ringing. Ringing is the most common.

There’s also a thing called "the Hum" Many people hear a humming sound. They did an "unsolved myesteries" program on it

question about tinnitus?

I have tinnitus that is very minute but seems to get loud if the temperature goes below around 25 degrees. Anyone with tinnitus have a similiar problem???

Could be due to stuffiness in your ear or nose when the temperature drops.

Valium, Xanax and Klonopin are benzodiazepine drugs that many doctors prescribe for tinnitus. These are conventional medications which achieve only limited success in tinnitus relief, and usually their bothersome side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation often discourage use.
They are addicting to varying degrees and cannot be used continuously for a long period of time. They are helpful in reducing tinnitus symptoms and aid in sleeping. Valium is the most addicting of these and is not used often for this reason.

Xanax is very popular and is prescribed often for tinnitus. However, the ATA report on medications that cause tinnitus lists Xanax as causing it in 6.6% of cases.

Some herbal remedies exist which can be used to support all body systems involved in helping the ear to perform its tasks of clear hearing and balance, as well as the circulatory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.

Some of the most common herbs used are
• Ginkgo Biloba is excellent for a number of cerebral and circulatory disorders. It is probably the most widely-used herb for tinnitus and many sufferers swear by this natural ingredient.
• Rosemary dilates and strengthens blood vessels and is an excellent circulation tonic. Rosemary is particularly useful for tinnitus that is caused or worsened by high blood pressure and other circulatory conditions.
• Avena Sativa is effective in reducing high cholesterol levels which can contribute to circulatory problems which cause tinnitus.
• Wild Hyssop s also useful in reducing pain and inflammation.
• Salicylic Ac. (30C) is indicated for tinnitus with loud roaring or ringing sounds, which may be accompanied by deafness or vertigo. This remedy is particularly useful in people whose symptoms began with a bout of flu, Meniere’s disease or long-term use of aspirin.

Hope all this helps

Good Luck!

why is it after i wear ear plugs my tinnitus gets worse?

ok so i have tinnitus from ear infection and i never expose myself to loud noise without ear plugs
i have just got a new motorbike and noticed it is quite loud anyway the first day i went out and wore ear plugs my tinnitus got worse. it wore off after 2 days. then today i went out and didnt wear them suprise suprise no increase or anything. why do ear plugs do this to my ears? my moto wud be about 85 dbs of sound when revved.

When you wear ear plugs, you end up hearing tinnitus more clearly because there is less background noise. Your attention can latch onto that frequency when you are consciously trying to avoid some other sounds and you are able to hear the tinnitus clearer (like when wearing earplugs and riding a motorcycle). When you rode without earplugs, you were probably worrying a lot less about your ears and your attention didn’t focus on the sound as much. tinnitus rarely goes away and most people have a certain level of it which accumulates over time. Certain things like ear infections and metabolic disturbances can accelerate the "volume" of the tinnitus during the disease course.

Can Computer Fans In My Desktop Always Running About 3 Feet Away From Me Cause Ear Ringing or Tinnitus?

Hello. Yes, I have ringing in my ears or tinnitus. I am not a medical doctor or anything related to the health fields. I have a desktop computer that has several small fans running at all times inside the computer tower. The fans are on at all times keeping the computer cool. I wouldn’t say they are very loud in my opinion, just a low decibel sound. The computer tower is about 3 feet from my head resting on the floor. For the best way to explain, it would be like a low or low power vacuum cleaner running in the next room with my door open to the next room. I have seen the common decibel chart used for hearing called the "Decibel (Loudness) Comparison Chart". There are a lot of these charts out there to look at. I couldn’t guess the decibel range because I don’t know exactly where to assume the sound level would be without proper equipment. I would be shooting in the dark. It is just strange that the ear that is the loudest ringing is the ear facing my computer tower. Also, I am many hours a day on my computer as well.

I am not asking you to diagnose me or provide a clinical evaluation as a health care professional, I am just asking if ear ringing in your opinion can be caused under my circumstances.

Thank you!

I’d say that it’s possible. To test it, you may want to get some earplugs, wear them for a few days and see if the tinnitus subsides. The link below gives some other good tips for reducing the effects of this annoying condition.

Should i go to the doctors about my Tinnitus?

Hi
On new years day 2008 I woke up after goin to a nightclub to find my ears were ringing so bad!! After a few days and no luck of it going away i went to the doctors and they said i had acoustic trauma and it should go away eventually! 6 months later although it has improved dramatically it has still not gone away however i have learnt to live with it and dont lose any sleep with it however i still have ringing in my left ear constantly! also l8ly my ears always seem to crack and pop EVERY time i swallow or yawn which is concerning! I have not been to see a doctor about any of this as i have research myself and feel they can not do anything about it but, the main reason is because i want to join the forces and believe i will be tunred down mediaclly if i have tinnitus on my medical record! WHAT SHOULD I DO???

The fact that this has been going on for over 6 months now is a bit concerning, and you need to see an ear/nose/throat doctor (an ENT or otorhinolaryngologist). They’ll be able to better treat you than your family doctor and also usually have an audiologist on staff who can do a comprehensive hearing study. Your concerns about being turned down for military service are valid, but they don’t take deaf people either. If you’ve got hearing damage you’ve got hearing damage — the fact that it’s documented in your medical record or not doesn’t change that. The worst thing you can do is not get it checked out, the condition gets worse, and now you can’t hear AND fail the military hearing exam. There are things doctors can do to help, do yourself a favor and go find out what.

I’m confused about tinnitus…?

I suspect that I have tinnitus. I have ringing in my ears very frequently and i realise that i’ve been listening to music at increasing vlumes since last year. when i play my instrument, my ears hurt and feel jarred at the high pitches.

I want to know if the symptoms & effects of tinnitus and whether it can be cured. but when i look at the existing questions here on yahoo answers, the answers are inconsistent. Some say that tinnitus can be cured, while some say that it can vary in volume but will never go away.

I need to know a definite answer cos i’m really worried.

My friend, infectted, has also asked about this on yahoo answers.

Can someone give a good answer cos i’m really worried for myself and for my friend.

thanks.

The answer is that there is no one answer that fits everyone across the board. If there’s an underlying cause for the tinnitus, like an infection or fluid in the ear, then it can definitely be cured. But there’s other reasons it can happen, and many of them are incurable. I once had a patient in a nursing home who had lived with a tinnitus humm in his ears for over 70 years, which was blamed on working with airplane engines.

Tinnitus. Advice needed if you know anything about condition?

Does tinnitus always take the same form or can the noises vary from day to day? Also do sufferers have the problem all the time or can it come and go?

I get noises in one ear but only in the evening. At first I genuinely thought the noises were coming from either inside or outside my house. One day it sounded like a car engine had been left running – maybe a fifty yards up the road. On another occasion it was a shrill ringing noise and another time it was a buzzing noise similar to the sound of a fridge/freezer when the remainder of the house is quiet. The first few times I had these noises I checked everything around the house and opened doors and windows to see if it was coming in from outside but, eventually, when I put my head on my pillow, I realised it was in my own head and it was even clearer when I was lying on one particular side.

Does this sound like tinnitus? Do the noises change for tinnitus sufferers and is there a reason why I only hear them at night? Can anything be done about this?

Question about tinnitus?

I’ve had fluctuating ringing in my left ear for many months now and recently have had ringing in the *right* ear for once – and if I concentrate on it the sound can intensify and the ringing in the left will lessen. What could this mean? Is the tinnitus getting better if it keeps changing like this? The first few months it was only constant and didn’t change at all, but now it does all the time ever since I increased my medication for the ringing.

For what it’s worth, when I had tinnitus in the past, I did some reflexology which I learned while in alternative health and it stopped the ringing for me. What you do is put your forefinger in front of the little flap of the ear that is ringing. Open your mouth wide so that a little dip or indent appears at that spot. Massage that "dip" area for around 30 seconds to a minute or until the ringing stops. Works every time for me. I rarely have it anymore. It could be a deeper underlying condition so going to a doctor may help. This is what helped me greatly.
