What can be done to minimise the effects of tinnitus (ringing in the ears)?

Apart from the expensive herbal supplements, what else is there? I need something practical!!

Try simply staying away from caffeine, salt, alcohol, cigarettes, aspirin, stress and fatigue. Many people get relief from their tinnitus by using tinnitus maskers, such as wave machines or soft soothing sounds by their bedside when they are going to sleep. There are ear worn tinnitus maskers that are available as well and you can get these through an audiologist. Some people find some relief using some biofeedback techniques and relaxation exercises. Tinnitus treatment is varied because the causes of problems that result in tinnitus are also varied.

Be sure to get a complete medical evaluation, inclusive of a complete audiological evaluation.

Check out the American Tinnitus Association website at www.ata.org for more information.

Good luck.

How can I fix my tinnitus?

I am a teenager and I have constant tinnitus. I got it during an ear infection a year ago and it has not gone away. I took hearing tests, and the tests say my hearing is perfect, and I can hear eveything fine, but the ringing bothers me. I have no symptoms of any other disease, so I don’t know what to do.

Cut back on caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and aspirin; they can make ringing in the ears worse.
Have your hearing checked. A properly adjusted hearing aid may diminish or even eliminate the ringing.
Ask your doctor about ear devices that cover up, or mask, tinnitus. Low-volume white noise, such as television or radio static, may also help.
Exercise to improve circulation and possibly ease symptoms.
Consider acupuncture to relieve the buzzing.
Aspirin, especially if it’s overused, can cause ringing in the ears — and so can the aspirin-like herb white willow bark. Avoid both of them if ringing in the ears is a problem.
Loud noises may be the prime contributing factor to tinnitus. To help prevent further damage to the ears, wear earplugs. They are a boon if you’re often exposed to noisy machinery, music, or explosives.

What are your symptoms of tinnitus. Does it ever go away?

My husband is being tested for it and the sounds in his ears are constant.

"Tinnitus is the name given to the condition of noises ‘in the ears’ and/or ‘in the head’ with no external source. tinnitus noises are described variously as ringing, whistling, buzzing and humming." [ Source: http://www.tinnitus.org.uk/information/info%20sheets/front%20page/what_is_tinnitus.htm ]
This is the fact sheet for the British Tinnitus Association.

There are some herbs your husband can try that might help. Here is a list:

Also, homeopathy and accupuncture are other possibilities worth exploring. Hope this helps.

How long does it take before i Know that it’s permanent tinnitus?

I was wondering how long it could take before it’s permanent tinnitus.

What is the Maximum?

Sincere
P

It is never permanent unless it is due to a physical injury. It is a nutritional deficiency, toxic condition due to bad dental work that is rampant in the U.S. today with so called "modern dentistry" that is leaving many people to deal with various illnesses due to the bad chemicals and practices dentists using their "standard of care" practices.

good luck to you

How do I get rid of this Tinnitus?

I have been suffering from an annoying ringing in both my ears for over a year. I can’t remember exactly how it started. I have it day and night and it makes me want to chop off my ears! I don’t notice it too much during the day when there are other noises to concentrate on. However, trying to sleep is becoming a problem. I can’t fall asleep without my fan on high. Does anyone know what I can do to get rid of my Tinnitus?!?!

I’m afraid that there is no cure-it-all medication for Tinnitus just as yet, with different drugs producing different effects for different people. Besides, tinnutus can be caused by a lot of factors such as ear wax, medications (particularly aspirin), aging and exposure to extremely loud noises. The first two causes can be resolved with the removal of ear wax and the discontinuance of medication respectively. Though for the remaining two, it would probably involve trial and error in the course of treatment. Nevertheless, consider using herbal remedies that have been formulated with Gingko Biloba (a popular treatment for tinnitus), Rosemary (a circulation tonic) and Avena Sativa (a nerve tonic). How can I stop that ringing in my ears? Tinnitus troubles?

I honestly don’t know why I have tinnitus. My guess is a number of factors during high school and my time in the Navy.

It can get loud enough to keep me from sleeping. Usually a high pitch sound but sometimes it oscillates.

what can i do?

thanks.

Think about things that will help you cope. Many people find listening to music very helpful. Focusing on music might help you forget about your tinnitus for a while. It can also help mask the sound. Other people like to listen to recorded nature sounds, like ocean waves, the wind, or even crickets.

Avoid anything that can make your tinnitus worse. This includes smoking, alcohol, and loud noise. If you are a construction worker, an airport worker, or a hunter, or if you are regularly exposed to loud noise at home or at work, wear ear plugs or special earmuffs to protect your hearing and keep your tinnitus from getting worse.

Can anybody give me the buzz on tinnitus?

I’ve suffered from tinnitus since May 11, 1996. I’ve had to accept the fact that these awful noises will never go away for the rest of my life, but what I can’t accept is the (sometimes intense) soreness, tingling, etc., in my ears as well as slight pains in my jaws and headaches which have all cropped up in recent years. Aspirin, Tylenol, etc., have little or no effect. Obviously tinnitus is not self-correcting which is why I haven’t noticed any improvement since I swore off headphones and loud music a couple of years ago (all of you I-Pod users out there, be warned).

A bit of background: I’m a 32 year-old male in excellent physical health with no history of head trauma or infectious disease (e.g. Meniere’s); my tinnitus was caused entirely by use of headphones. Amazingly, an ENT has tested me and told me that my hearing is still perfect despite the tinnitus. And, I don’t have any other tinnitus-related symptoms such as insomnia or vertigo.

Any suggestions?

Wow! God bless you. I am only slightly familiar with this terrible condition as I only suffer from this at night when I’m about to fall asleep. My husband also has a mild case because when in Iraq he suffered an IED attack that damaged his earring. He went through extensive surgery, but this is the final outcome for him. Your case sounds alot more intense than any other I’ve heard of. I can’t imagine living with that for 10 years. The only thing I could suggest for you would be to research clinics or hospitals around the country that specialize in this type of condition. Maybe they can offer you some hope. Well good luck to you and God Bless! :)

Is it possible for that tinnitus commercial on the radio to give me tinnitus?

Why would any radio station play that commercial? They play this loud, extended, whiny pitch, trying to duplicate what a person with tinnitus would hear. I’d bet they are creating customers. I instantly change the channel!

I’m with "Debbie’s angel" as I too have tinnitus & at times it litterly drives me crazy. NO, it’s NOT a bit funny, & I don’t know how they ever could duplicate the "real" noise it makes with that CONSTANT ringing in one’s ears. It has actually woken me up at nites sometimes it’s so loud. I did try one OTC med. for it, took the whole bottle, but of course NO relief. It just NEVER stops & seems to be worse first thing in the mornings & at nite. Guess that’s when things are the most quiet. But I’m constantly turning up the TV because I just cannot hear it above that high pitched ringing…:(
