Apart from the expensive herbal supplements, what else is there? I need something practical!!

Try simply staying away from caffeine, salt, alcohol, cigarettes, aspirin, stress and fatigue. Many people get relief from their tinnitus by using tinnitus maskers, such as wave machines or soft soothing sounds by their bedside when they are going to sleep. There are ear worn tinnitus maskers that are available as well and you can get these through an audiologist. Some people find some relief using some biofeedback techniques and relaxation exercises. Tinnitus treatment is varied because the causes of problems that result in tinnitus are also varied.

Be sure to get a complete medical evaluation, inclusive of a complete audiological evaluation.

Check out the American Tinnitus Association website at www.ata.org for more information.

Good luck.

Has there been any advance in the treatment of tinnitus? I have been told that there is no treatment available but wonder if there is any promising on-going research.

Surprisingly, not much on this front.

Still, sufferers resort to noise maskers along with herbal remedies which have proven to be more beneficial than their conventional counterparts.

Valium, Xanax and Klonopin are benzodiazepine drugs that many doctors prescribe for tinnitus. These are conventional medications which achieve only limited success in tinnitus relief, and usually their bothersome side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation often discourage use.

They are addicting to varying degrees and cannot be used continuously for a long period of time. They are helpful in reducing tinnitus symptoms and aid in sleeping. Valium is the most addicting of these and is not used often for this reason.

Xanax is very popular and is prescribed often for tinnitus. However, the ATA (American Tinnitus Association) report on medications that cause tinnitus lists Xanax as causing it in 6.6% of cases.

There is actually no cure for tinnitus with the conventional medicine. Actually, since last many years, the onus has been on the herbal industry to provide relief, if any, to tinnitus sufferers.

Tinnitus is usually due to damage to the microscopic ends of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Perfect hearing is possible only if these nerves remain healthy and any damage to these nerves results in tinnitus or hearing impairment.

Some herbal remedies exist which can be used to support all body systems involved in helping the ear to perform its tasks of clear hearing and balance, as well as the circulatory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.

Some of the most common herbs & biochemic tissue salts used are
• Ginkgo Biloba is excellent for a number of cerebral and circulatory disorders. It is probably the most widely-used herb for tinnitus and many sufferers swear by this natural ingredient.
• Rosemary dilates and strengthens blood vessels and is an excellent circulation tonic. Rosemary is particularly useful for tinnitus that is caused or worsened by high blood pressure and other circulatory conditions.
• Avena Sativa is effective in reducing high cholesterol levels which can contribute to circulatory problems which cause tinnitus.
• Wild Hyssop s also useful in reducing pain and inflammation.
• Salicylic Ac. (30C) is indicated for tinnitus with loud roaring or ringing sounds, which may be accompanied by deafness or vertigo. This remedy is particularly useful in people whose symptoms began with a bout of flu, Meniere’s disease or long-term use of aspirin.
• Ferrum phosphoricum (Ferrum phos. D6) is a homeopathic biochemic tissue salt which supports the absorption of iron in the body. The protective myelin sheath which surrounds all nerve tissue needs iron to supply this vital nutrient to the nerve cells it encases. Regular use of Ferrum phos. can help to prevent dizziness, headaches and restlessness and is of great benefit for those who tend to feel irritable, tense and tired.
• Magnesium phosphate (Mag. phos. D6) well-known as a homeopathic painkiller, Mag. phos. is also of great benefit to the health of the nerves. It acts as a natural anti-spasmodic and a nerve and muscle relaxant and is also frequently recommended for stress headaches.

Hope all this helps

Good Luck!

It could be tinnitus, something I’m suffering from right now.
It’s a constant ringing in the ears & appears worse at night-time when the house is silent. What works for me is to listen to talk-back radio, music is not enough of a distraction.
From some research, I’ve read that it can be caused by many reasons like being in excessively loud environments, a middle ear infection or wax on the ear drum.
For more info, http://www.tinnitus.asn.au/

All that said, I’m not a Dr, so if in any doubt, get any hearing concerns checked out by a health professional.

Okay here goes feel free to give any advice thank you!!!!

The leaves rustled as they blew around my feet. I was eight years old. Peoples screams filled the church. "Why! Why did this happen?". I looked down, my school socks were muddy, my legs had goosebumps and I was shivering from the cold. My hair was wet, my school uniform torn. Within an instance, my whole world seemed to stand still. The noise’s around me blurred and for a moment. The only thing i could hear was a cry, a long and fearful cry. My mothers body lay there, as i lent down and put my hand upon hers i felt she was holding something. I took it out of her cleanched fist. It was some sort of key, silver with an enscription on the back in gold. The wind roared as i put it around my neck and fastend the clasp. A tear rolled down my cheek. But only one. No more. I wrapped my arms around myself and shut my eyes, i imagined the heavens and angels and wispered "Please, give me her back." I could hear sirens now, they became louder and louder, the tune thudding against my ear drum. I ran. I tripped. I blacked out.

"Hello Maia, i’m Jane."
Eights years on, im still getting counselling treatment for that night, however this is my last session. The warm sun beat down on my skin through the window, the rays of warmth filled my body with heat.

"I know what happend to you was traumatic…I can understand that. But your 16 now, you need to get along with life."
"I didn’t ask to come here did i? And I am getting on with life." I snapped.
"Mia… You havent been to school since you were 12…maybe you should go back…"

Oh here we go. Go back? Have everyone wispering ‘Oh look! there’s that girl Mia, she was the daughter of that famous woman who threw herself off a church’. Please. Save me the aggrevation.

"I dont want to go back, my income is fine now." I play with my fingers and try to not make eye contact.
"Mia, its a saturday job, and you live with your father. A saturday job is not nearly enough income to support yourse-"
"Myself?" I roll my eyes and sigh.

She slides me over an envolope. I open it slowly, inside it theres a school, a date and a time for me to attend.

I felt her touch the back of my shoulder. "Its in England, no’one will have heard of you over there, you should give it a try…for your fathers sake atleast."

She sits down. In my head i begin to wonder why i ever had to go through what i did. After it happend, my father Bill arrived. I remember waking up to him calling my name. I began to think it was all a dream. I cry. He took me in his arms and wispered "Don’t be scared princess, daddys here." I look up and say "Is she really gone?" My dad turns whilst the rain beats down harder upon us. "No sweetie, mummy had to go help the angels."

As i get up and walk out the door, i turn around. Jane smiles, she says softly "Mia, its a chance. A chance for a new start. A new life.

I smile back but i dont say thank you and i dont say goodbye. I turn around and walk out.
it isnt finshed its just a rough copy and it isnt the WHOLE story

Ok. First of all good for you to start writing a novel. I’ve always wanted to write a novel myself, but I’m not completely committed to one thought, yet. I actually read that and I have a few bad things to say. You didn’t spell check, for instance Maia and Mia. That held my attraction and took away from the story itself. Another thing is that it is sort of short for being the first chapter. You need to have more information, maybe about how she looks. Also, I don’t really like the story line because it seems very unoriginal as far as I know. Not so much as plagirism or anything, but I just feel as, though, I may have heard something very similar to it.

As far as good things, I do like how you described how she felt and looked in the beginning. The first paragraph was very interesting. I think you may have exagerated in the next few paragraphs because she was 8 when her mom died and now she is 16. No one ever truly gets over the loss of one of their parents, but I think she would have been able to get along at least by a few years in. Maybe you could change the age of 16 to a younger age. It would just make more sense to me. When something doesn’t make sense it is hard to follow.

Also, this is going to sound very picky, I don’t especially like the names you have chosen. I like Mia, but Jane is so unoriginal. Maybe you could change that to a more CREATIVE name.

I hope you take my criticism as not being rude, but you grow from it. I hope you end up publishing your book.

Thank you very, very much. I have written around five versions of the start of the novel and aren’t satisfied with any of them, this is the latest version, let me know what you think. Thanks again. Any tips are welcome too.

‘Yet to be titled’

Chapter One

I stormed outside and slammed the door hard shut behind me. I could still hear Craig’s voice chasing me through the wooden door, and though muffled, I could still make out the blunt profanity.
I slung my heavy bag around to my front as I was hurrying off down the street and scrambled around in the inside pouch for my little mp3. My hands enclosed around the cool metal and I whipped it out, eagerly plugging it into my ears and putting Clair De Lune on repeat. I sighed as the ethereal, fantastical music touched my ears like chocolate touches the tongue. I clicked the volume up to full – mind you, it didn’t go very loud, because it was a soft classical piece. The most beautiful piece I had ever heard.
After a few minutes of walking in the cool air, and listening to my lullaby, I felt calmer. I took one of the earphones out; Mike would be joining me any minute. Sure enough, as I rounded onto the next street, I saw his tall and thin familiar shape moving towards me.
‘Hey,’ I said when he caught up.
‘Hey. What’s on the music menu today?’ He asked, smiling with his hands casually in his pockets.
‘Debussy.’ I stated.
‘Again?’ He says, though if he’s surprised, it’s not evident in his voice.
‘Yup.’ I said, staring straight ahead.
‘You’re still upset then, eh?’ He asks, and I can feel his gaze.
‘Well it’s been a rough week and you know my Debussy calms me down.’ I said, looking at him and giving him a reassuring smile. I didn’t want him to worry.
‘You know if…’ He said, trailing off.
‘I know, thank you.’ I said quietly. Mike was all ears, always. I appreciated him for that…he was the only one I could really talk to, yet I still chose not to. I don’t really know why.
‘Anyway, how was your weekend?’ I asked, smiling again.
‘Eh, alright. Stayed at my dad’s…’
‘Oh yeah, how’d it go?’ I asked, though I could tell from his face.
He shrugged. ‘He broke up with his girlfriend, so he was a bit of a sad sap the whole weekend.’
‘Oh…that’s too bad.’ I said, reaching up and patting him on the arm.
‘Never mind. He’ll probably have another one by the time I next see him.’ He said bitterly, looking away.
I didn’t know what to say; I wasn’t much good at consoling people. Maybe he sensed my discomfort, because he changed the subject.
‘Guess it’s a crappy start to the week for both of us,’ He said, smiling again.
I grinned, ‘yep. Ah well, there’s always next week.’
We walked in silence for a few minutes. It brought back the memory of the first time we met – two years ago, but it felt like much more. I had started walking faster after I saw his lean and (back then) shorter figure approaching me. I wasn’t much good at socializing, especially with strangers, and most especially with boys.
To my dismay, he caught up with me and struck up a conversation – if you can call him talking to me and me nodding and smiling politely a conversation. A one-way conversation if you like.
Eventually, I felt comfortable around him, maybe a few weeks after we had started to walk together, and our conversations developed. Now we’re good friends. I smiled…imagine if he hadn’t been persistent with me those first few weeks?
‘Okay, well, this is my turn off,’ Mike said, bringing me back the present.
I sighed. ‘Well try and have a good day,’
‘You too, see you this arvo,’ He called out as he turned down another street.
‘See you.’ I said, putting my earphone back in and continuing down the road. I glanced at my watch and picked up my pace, it seemed that the cold wind did too. I was in a better mood already, thanks to Mike. Sure, our conversation wasn’t the most cheerful one, but just talking to someone that I could relate to was nice. Because I sure knew that wouldn’t be happening at school – or at home for that matter.
I saw Mike for about ten minutes in total everyday, five before school and five after school, yet I felt as though he was my closest friend. Perhaps because he was my only friend, to be really honest. Sometimes I wondered what it would be like if Mike went to the same school as me…I would never have to feel like a Nigel No-Friends…but perhaps it’s meant to be this way. Just the few minutes of my day meeting with the few minutes of his day – maybe that’s what made our friendship so special.
The wind picked up its speed and woke me from my thoughts, tossing my hair about and stinging my nose. The music came to my attention again. The piano in my ears became louder and more passionate – like at the climax of a good romance movie – I thought of myself playing it, how my fingers would glide across the shiny white keys…I imagined Debussy creating this beauty, closing his eyes and feeling his heart warm up, ‘this is the one’ he would

I liked it alot!

2 things-
1. Use quotation marks around speech
2. Most American/Canadians don’t know that avro means afternoon, I know b/c I’m cool like that, but yeah.

Other than that, I enjoyed reading it.

I am a teenager and I have constant tinnitus. I got it during an ear infection a year ago and it has not gone away. I took hearing tests, and the tests say my hearing is perfect, and I can hear eveything fine, but the ringing bothers me. I have no symptoms of any other disease, so I don’t know what to do.

Cut back on caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and aspirin; they can make ringing in the ears worse.
Have your hearing checked. A properly adjusted hearing aid may diminish or even eliminate the ringing.
Ask your doctor about ear devices that cover up, or mask, tinnitus. Low-volume white noise, such as television or radio static, may also help.
Exercise to improve circulation and possibly ease symptoms.
Consider acupuncture to relieve the buzzing.
Aspirin, especially if it’s overused, can cause ringing in the ears — and so can the aspirin-like herb white willow bark. Avoid both of them if ringing in the ears is a problem.
Loud noises may be the prime contributing factor to tinnitus. To help prevent further damage to the ears, wear earplugs. They are a boon if you’re often exposed to noisy machinery, music, or explosives.

Supplement Recommendations –
Treatment is at hand in the form of vitamins, minerals, and herbs.

Comments: This form of niacin does not cause flushing.

Vitamin B6
Dosage: 50 mg 3 times a day.
Comments: 200 mg daily over long term can cause nerve damage.

Vitamin B12/Folic Acid
Dosage: 1,000 mcg vitamin B12 and 400 mcg folic acid a day.
Comments: Take sublingual form for best absorption.

Magnesium
Dosage: 400 mg twice a day.
Comments: Take with food; reduce dose if diarrhea develops.
